A THIRST FOR DESIRE

In Venice there once lived a modest fellow called Maffio, whose ardour far outstripped his fortune. One evening, in a patrician ridotto near the Rialto—at a masked ball where veils slipped away faster than corsets—his heart was swept off by Veronica, radiant in beauty and sharp as a rapier in mind.

She spoke of poetry and revolution, idly circling the rim of a brimming glass; Maffio, captivated more by her intellect than her beauty, edged closer. Their words first flashed like tempered steel, then softened to a caress. Out on the terrace, with the calli blurred by mist and the lanterns trembling, they traded glances, verses— and lips.

At dawn Veronica, with a rueful smile, confessed she was a courtesan—sparing in the granting of her favours; their kiss remained unfinished. Heart in turmoil, Maffio sought a celebrated doctor-apothecary of the Serenissima, reputed above any confessor for his secret elixirs.

He received two: one bitter, a balm for broken hearts; the other sweet and beguiling, a pledge to draw his beloved back into his arms. Thus was the legend of Maffio born.
